The Steel Nation Tournament Begins: January 7th 2008
**Added rules, information of the bracket system and on donations commissions.
* Thanks to ~
electromancer for doing the editing on all this to make it more official.
ContentIt's been kinda hard work organising this tournament, a lot of people seem keen to get started, and I dont blame 'em, we're moving into the holiday season and things just keep getting busier (ironically enough).
I'm really trying to do right by the entrants as well as create a really different experience as far as tournaments go, a lot of limitations have been established as a result, trying to encourage people to be creative within those restrictions. It's a huge challenge and I'd like to thank you all for your interest and encouragement.
[Edit]: Added a forum for your Q&A convenience
[link]Anyways onto the actual information.
StorySteel Nation is a Mech testing ground owned by a gentleman as mysterious as he is wealthy.
Each year, he holds the Machine & Technology Expo; a trade show showing off new mech models, parts, accessories and weaponry. Though the biggest attraction by far is the Steel Nation Tournament, inviting companies and Mech enthusiasts from all around to show off what their mechs are capable of. Entry is open to anyone with a battle ready mech, pending review by a qualified team of officials. < See. Auditions.>

Once the combatants have been selected the tournament will begin. Each combatant will be placed at random locations in the battlefield of their choice. From there, they will seek out their opponent and battle until one of the combatants:
1. forfeits the match.
2. is incapacitated
3. is killed.
Battlefields <More to come>

Rules
1. No god mode (examples would be impenetrable armour, energy melee weapons [see comments for more information] , unlimited ammo, etc.)
2. The Expo Centre is a safe zone. Any hostile acts within the zone will not be tolerated and will result in immediate disqualification from the tournament. This is for the safety of our patrons.
3. All mechs are to have a sponsor/representative. A.I. system mechs are not permitted to enter unless piloting a seperate mech or taking commands from it's controller. (as in, must be a piloted craft)
4. No limit on crew size.
5. One mech per slot. Multiple mechs that join to form one are allowed, but must act as a unit/team. All battles are 1 vs 1.
6. Going out of bounds will forfeit the match. There is a vertical limit of 5 kilometers.
7. Original mechs only. No fan Gundams or Transformers.
8. Combatants may not fight in the same arena consecutively.
9. Size limits for mechs are as follows:
Minimum size- Sport Utility Vehicle
Maximum size- Commercial Jetliner
10. Be creative. Tactics and strategy beat big guns and power.
Bracket System
Unlike other OC Tournaments, battles won't be completely random. Steel Nation will feature a bracket system similar to a sports league. The contestants who pass the audition phase will be allotted at random to one of 4 Divisions; 2 Divisions per Conferance. Each Division will hold 8 contestants who will battle until there is a Division Champion.
The Division Champions will then battle the other from their Conference to determine the Conference Champion. The 2 Conference Champs will then battle to determine the Tournament Champion.
-> All 4 Division Champions will receive an artwork of their mech and pilot(s) and a 3 month DA subscription.
-> The 2 Conference Champions will have the subscription upgraded to 6 months on top of the artwork.
-> The Tournament Champion will upgrade to a 1 year subscription on top of the artwork.
Donate to Steel NationI've chosen to offer subscriptions as prizes but that comes to a rather costly amount in the end. If people could help out just a little it would be most wonderful. Though I don't like asking without giving something in return so! I'm offering donation commissions, you donate whatever you feel ok with contributing, and anything over a certain threshold will get you an art thinger of some kind.
Any donation over $3 gets you a single character sketch.
Over $8 gets you a clean single character image (pencil or ink depending on how clean I can get my pencils.)
Over $13 is a single character coloured piece.

Sketchfighter316 is also doing commissions for SN, see
his journal for more details.

This statement is ironic.
Now it isn't
Now it is!
OR IS IT?!
Nope, not anymore.
But what about now?

-If there is going to be an arranged bracket system i say matches would be better in preselected battle arenas instead of a battlefield of our choice.
For example ... if your mech is not well equipped for underwater and you got an ocean arena selected for you ... you have to think of a way to fight your enemy without staying underwater for too long ... my point is its gonna create some nice surprises and tension .. in the end its all up to you anyway
-Energy weapons !!! .. i totally understand the No god mode rule ... but why are energy weapons included there ... i mean energy weapons can overheat or have a long cool down time or even a limited supply of energy battery .. so i guess its no problem to use energy weapons ... am i missing something ?
Thanks for reading and thanks for arranging this tournament ^_^
Have a nice day

Is it allowed to make minor life-support modification in between matches since some arena might be hazardous to the pilot if the mech is untouched?

The main reason we don't choose the arenas for the contestants is because they have enough limitations in the rules as it is. Rule 8 forces people to fight in a different arena then the last one. This way they can choose how to challenge themselves while still allowing them to return to places they don't have a hard time drawing.

Not in cruelty.
Not in wrath,
The REAPER came today;
An ANGEL visited
this gray path,
And took the cube away.
Is a cloaking system okay ?

The motto :Work Hard And Play Hard: actually does has some justifiction in the meaning.
But the energy weapons i meant are the beam type weapons ( laser beams, plasma blasts, etc etc ) not the melee type ... so i guess that means beam weapons are ok .. right ?
And i agree with you on the arena matter
Thanks again
